For Microsoft Windows 10 users, the October 2018 update sees a list of features being removed, moved and re-deployed, including the popular “Snipping Tool” app.

The following is the full list of features and functionalities that will be removed in Windows 10 version 1809, along with some new features being added. Applications that depend on these features won’t function in this release unless an alternative method is used.

Features Removed In Windows 10 Version 1809

  1. Removed: Business Scanning (also called Distributed Scan Management)
Business Scanning, the secure scanning and scanner management app, will be removed as no devices support this feature.
  2. Removed: FontSmoothing Setting (in unattend.xml)
The FontSmoothing setting, which lets you specify the font antialiasing strategy across the platform, will be removed as it’s no longer necessary. Windows 10 will use ClearType by default.
  3. Replaced: Hologram App
The Hologram app is being replace with the Mixed Reality Viewer. 3D word art can still be created using Paint 3D and your art can still be viewed in VR or Hololens with the Mixed Reality Viewer.
  4. Released As Open Source: limpet.exe
The limpet.exe tool, used to access TPM for Azure connectivity, is being released as open source
  5. Removed: Phone Companion
The Phone Companion app will be removed in the update. The Phone page in the Settings app includes all the Phone Companion features so you can use it to sync your mobile phone with your PC.
  6. Removed: Trusted Platform Module (TPM) management console
The TPM management console information will now be available on the Device security page in the Windows Defender Security Center instead.

Microsoft is also no longer publishing new updates to the WEDU server and instead, new updates can be secured from the Microsoft Update Catalog.

Windows 10 Features That Are No Longer Being Developed

In addition, Microsoft is no longer actively developing the following features, some of which have been replaced with other features or functionality, with others now available from different sources.

  1. Replaced: Snipping Tool
The popular Snipping Tool app is used to capture screenshots and snips of a user’s screen. A new universal app, Snip & Sketch, is being introduced that provides the same screen snipping abilities, as well as additional features.
  2. Stopped: Companion device dynamic (CDF) lock APIS
The CDF APIs enable wearables and other devices to unlock a PC. In version 1709, Dynamic Lock was introduced, which included an inbox method using Bluetooth to detect whether a user is present and lock or unlock the PC. Because of this, and because third party partners didn’t adopt the CDF method, they are no longer developing CDF Dynamic Lock APIs.
  3. Replaced: OneSync service
Added new sync engine will be added to the Outlook app that provides the same syncing functionality as the OneSync service, which synchronizes data for the Mail, Calendar, and People apps.

So there you have it, the beloved Snipping Tool is just getting a new name a more features, so nothing to worry about!
